IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications
8-11 September 2019 // Istanbul, Turkey

Welcome from the General Chairs

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is a great pleasure to welcome you to the 2019 Annual IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (IEEE PIMRC 2019), which will be held on 8 – 11 September 2019 at the Istanbul Congress Center (ICC) located in the heart of Istanbul, Turkey. IEEE PIMRC 2019 will mark the 30th anniversary of PIMRC, which was founded in 1989 as a workshop in London and developed over the years to become a major conference of the IEEE Communications Society in the field of wireless communications and networks.

PIMRC 2019 features 61 technical sessions disseminating the latest research results in communications and networking as well as 7 panels in which industry leaders will address technical and business challenges and give their vision on future trends. Prior to the start of the technical sessions and panels, which are scheduled from Monday to Wednesday, the program includes 12 tutorials by world-renowned experts on Sunday, 8 September 2019. This is a great opportunity for students, researchers, and practicing engineers to learn about new technologies and keep up-to-date in this rapidly evolving field. The same day, we also have 6 half-day workshops on hot and emerging topics, which nicely complement the main program of the conference.

The Opening Plenary on Monday features a keynote by Dr. Gediz Sezgin, Executive VP, Network Technologies of Turkcell, which is the major cellular operator in Turkey. Next, the keynotes session on Tuesday features the keynotes of Dr. Marcus Frodigh VP and Head of Ericsson Research, Ericsson, and of Prof. Vincent Poor from Princeton University. Finally, our keynote speakers on Wednesday are Dr. Peiying Zhu, Director, 5G Wireless Research, Huawei, and Prof. Harald Haas from the University of Edinburgh. We are delighted to have this set of prominent guests as keynote speakers. Their talks on 5G and its future evolutions, machine learning, and visible light communications will add a special touch to the conference program.

It is a privilege to have Istanbul as the host city for IEEE PIMRC 2019. This city has a unique geographical location: Indeed, Istanbul is the only city in the world that is located on two continents, with bridges over the Bosphorus connecting Europe and Asia. The former capital of three successive empires – Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman – and the 2010 European Capital of Culture, Istanbul honors and preserves the fabulous legacy of its past, while looking forward to its modern future. It is in this fabulous environment that IEEE PIMRC 2019 will bring together researchers, developers, practitioners, and business executives from all over the world. The conference committee has also prepared an exciting social program that will make your stay in this magnificent city most enjoyable.

We look forward to meeting you in Istanbul at IEEE PIMRC 2019.
